Sweden: Helsingborg and Malmo

Day 1

After traveling from Copenhagen to Helsingborg, Michael and I took a 30 minute ferry over to Sweden.  Once we made it to Helsingborg, we checked into our hotel, Hotel Tornet, which we booked last minute and got a great deal. The hotel was in a great location, offered breakfast and had a very large room with a kitchenette. By the time we checked in we were starving and decided to try out this chain restaurant called, Holy Greens. This meal was the best meal that Michael and I had on the whole trip. They offer many types of salads with amazing and unique combinations. Our salads had beetroot hummus, romaine lettuce, chicken, walnuts, avocado, carrots and quinoa. I can go on and on about this restaurant because I was so obsessed, I want to bring it to California now. The chain is only in Sweden so we ended up going to two other locations while we were there.

After our amazing meal, we went on a walk around Helsingborg along the shopping street and up the stairs to the Karnan (tower). We could not go inside the tower because it had closed but we were tired from the long travel day so we decided to sit and grab drinks. We stopped at a spot at the bottom of the stairs to the Karnan. The cafe offered Lagunitas IPA, our hometown brewery, but we did not get it of course since we were in Sweden. After taking a well deserved break we walked over to Cafe Bastill for a quick dinner of pizza and salad to go. We brought our dinner back to the hotel and after eating it we passed out and rested up for the next day.

Day 2

We woke up and had a nice breakfast at the Hotel Tarnet, which offered  yogurt, fruit, eggs, meat cheese, bread, jam and coffee. We then took the train to Malmo. which took about 50 minutes. After checking into The Renaissance, which we booked last minute again and got a great deal, we took a self guided walking tour. I downloaded an app that had free walking tours and we took a nice tour around the city.

Malmo City Streets

The tour started at the Slottsmöllan, which is a historic Dutch mill from 1851, situated in Slottsträdgården. The park it is located in is very nice and has a beer garden in the center for an afternoon drink. From the park we started towards the city center and walked along the main walking street Sodergatan which has many sculptures and fountains to see along the way.

We finished our walking tour with drinks at a cafe located in Lilla Torg, Folk and Rock which is also a record store that has music. Our hotel was located right next to this square and it was the perfect location for getting around the city.

After a well deserved break we decided what better to do than try some more local beer. We headed off to Malmo Brewing Co, which was about a 30 minute walk from Lilla Torg. The taproom offers a relaxed atmosphere and made us feel like we were back at a microbrewery in California. The taproom has many beers on tap and delicious looking food made from scratch. We found another Lagunitas shirt here!

It was finally dinner time and what better to have in Sweden than HOLY GREENS! So we had Holy Greens for dinner again, yum!

After a long day we finished the night off with a nightcap at Malmo Live Skybar. The bar is at the top of the Clarion Hotel and offers amazing views of Malmo, I would recommend going here at Sunset for a picture perfect setting.

Day 3

The next morning around 9:30 A.M. we took the train to Lund, Sweden (about 20 minute ride). The city center is dominated by Lund University and its surrounding buildings. The town was very cute but also very sleepy on a Friday morning, nothing was open. It was almost comical how everything seemed to be closed and not open until 11:00 A.M. or 12:00 P.M. If you are going to visit this city definitely go around lunch time or the afternoon. Even though everything was closed we still had a nice outdoor walking tour of the town. We strolled through the Botanical Garden and then on to Salhallen, which is a large indoor food market that offers hand made sausages, hand-sorted coffee beans, locally grown produce and fresh goat yoghurt. We finally gave up and decided to head back to Malmo around 12:00 P.M.

After arriving back in Malmo, Michael convinced me to go to the Ribersborgs Kallbadhus (Bathhouse). This was one of the most unique things we did on the trip and I highly recommend it. Located about a 45 minute walk from the city center is a bathhouse with saunas and large outdoor pools. You go into one of the saunas (Co-ed or gender specific) and then go outside and take the chilling plunge into the ocean. Remember it was about 50 degrees Fahrenheit outside! The other rule of the bathhouse is that no clothes are allowed. I would highly recommend taking a trip to the Ribersborgs Kallbadhus for a unique, freeing experience that will leave you feeling rejuvenated. There is also a cafe there if you need something warm after your sauna and swim in the ocean.

Then we went to Holy Greens again for a late lunch.

As

much as we enjoyed Malmo we missed Copenhagen and wanted to have one more time in the city before leaving. We took the 30 minute train from Malmo to Copenhagen to walk around and go to the Street Food Warehouse again. We could not get enough of Copenhagen and the lively feel of the city.

We stayed the night in Malmo and then took the train to Copenhagen in the morning for our flight home. We had some time to kill so we went to one of the bakeries that we had been eyeing, Lagkagehuse, and got the Danish special. It was a like a cinnamon roll that was ooey gooey and delicious and the perfect last meal to end our trip in Denmark and Sweden.

Our trip to Denmark and Sweden was amazing and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking of traveling. It was very easy to get around and the locals were very friendly and welcoming. Now time to plan our next trip!!!
